World War 1, also known as the Great War, was a global conflict that lasted from 1914 to 1918. It involved many of the world's great powers divided into two opposing alliances: the Allies and the Central Powers. The conflict was sparked by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary, and eventually led to the involvement of many countries in the war. The war was characterized by trench warfare, where soldiers lived in long, narrow ditches for extended periods.
